My Daughter's First Photo Contest {Please Vote!}

Ok, friends and family in the blogging world, I need your help! I've entered my youngest, Molly, into a photo contest and would LOVE it if she won. My good friend, Tessa, of Grin & Share It Photography is holding a contest for the cutest summertime photo of your child(ren).

I spent a lot of time trying to come up with the perfect photo. I even staged a few mini-shoots including one beach time fun in our sandbox and one picnic scene in Uncle Andrew's back yard. But the best one out of the bunch was of Miss M "gardening" in our front yard. Her favorite thing to do lately is pull all of our weeds out (and try to eat them) so I thought this not only turned out to be an awesome photo but it also captured what she is really into this summer. No sand and water for her... it's all about the dirt and mud!

Today is the last day to vote and voting ends at 2pm PST so if you could follow the instructions below we'd be very grateful!

So to vote please go to Grin & Share It Photography's facebook page and like her page. Then go to Molly's photo (#8 - here) and comment on it with your vote (likes don't count). I really appreciate any and all votes for my baby girl!

Preparing for Baby

Today will be quite a busy day in the kitchen for me and my friend, Miranda. We're going to prep a whole bunch of meals so that when the little one comes Joseph and I won't have to worry about feeding ourselves on top of everything else we'll have to worry about. Here's a list of the meals we plan on preparing:

BBQ Chicken (BBQ sauce on chicken... very original)
Broccoli & Cheddar Stuffed Chicken
Bacon & Cheddar Stuffed Chicken
Teriyaki Glazed Pork Chops
Cinnamon Chipotle Pork Chops (from a McCormick's Grill Mates rub)
Pork Chops with Maple Balsamic Glaze
Turkey Meatloaf
Turkey Pie (similar to Hamburger Pie but w/ ground turkey)
Chili
Meatballs & Marinara Sauce
Macaroni & Cheese

Please let me know if you can think of any meals that we might like to make in advance and freeze until dinner time :)

Our Kitchen Remodel (Almost) Complete!

I just wanted to share a few photos of our (almost) complete kitchen remodel.

The only things we have left to do are install the knobs and pulls and repair/paint the window sill. I couldn't be more happy with the results. Joseph worked long hours to make sure that the kitchen was done before the bridal shower I threw Amanda and all of his hard work definitely paid off.

I now have a beautiful kitchen to cook and entertain in. The extra space is just wonderful and all of the details help to make the kitchen easier to use. From spice racks next to the stove to fully extending pull out drawers in the pantry this kitchen is our dream kitchen.

I'll take pictures of the different components and post those soon but wanted to show the over all changes :)

Dog food bowls... now you see them...

Now you don't! When we entertain we can push the bowls in

Can lighting that Joseph installed along with our pantry and broom closet (left) and extra counter & cabinet space (right). From right to left on the bottom cabinets we have a cabinet for our trash & recycle bins, a cabinet with a stand for my KA mixer, a lazy susan corner cabinet, and a cookie tray rack.

A view from the living room into the kitchen. See how open it is??

Showers!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hosting a bridal shower for my good friend Amanda. It was an afternoon filled with fun and laughter (what shower isn't?). I had a great time coming up with the menu and in the end kept it short and simple.

I made a few dishes and bought some store bought items to help out. Sometimes you can't do everything (especially at 9 months pregnant!).

We had three dips for the veggie tray:
Hummus (Trader Joes brand since I couldn't find tahini paste anywhere!)
Roasted Garlic & White Bean Dip
Tzatziki Dip

I got a few bags of the Mediterranean Supreme salad kit from the grocery store (sooo good! I highly recommend this salad).

I made three different kinds of sandwiches (I bought all the bread):
Tuna with Lemon Habanero Mayo and Watercress (the person helping me forgot the watercress in the fridge) on Ciabatta Bread
Ham and Turkey with Avocado Spread on French Rolls
Cucumber & Cream Cheese on Sourdough

And for dessert I made Lemon Cream Scones and had a local bakery drop off some cupcakes and an 8" round. One of the cupcake flavors (Midori Melon Mojito) was actually a recipe I stumbled upon on the I Heart Cuppycakes blog. I forwarded the recipe to the baker and she agreed to try it out. They were so good! I can't wait to make them myself.

I served hot tea, iced tea and water to drink because I didn't have the time at the end to make any punches (alcoholic or not) and not many complained :) Here are a few pictures:

The whole display :) It was soo cute!

And last but not least...

Planning a Bridal Shower

My good friend, Amanda, is getting married in April and she was kind enough to ask me to be her Matron of Honor. I gladly accepted and am so excited for the happy couple. This Saturday I will be hosting a bridal shower in honor of Amanda and have tried to narrow down the menu.

Let me know what you think:

Main Course:
Turkey & Ham sandwiches with Avocado on Wheat Bread
Tuna Salad on Ciabatta Bread
Cucumber & Cream Cheese Sandwiches on White Bread

Sides:
Veggie tray
Hummus
Tzatziki
Garlic & White Bean Dip
Toasted Baguettes ala Costco :)

Sweets:
Currant Cream Scones
Snickerdoodles
Cupcakes (Medori Melon Mojito & Lemon w/ Vanilla Lemon Buttercream frosting) made by a local bakery
Small Cake (Vanilla w/ Vanilla Buttercream frosting) made by a local bakery

Drinks:
Various teas
Coffee
Water w/ cucumber
Alcoholic & Non Alcoholic Punch (any ideas on recipes/flavors???)

Ideas? Suggestions? I'm up for anything :)

I Love Surprises!!!

Guess what I came home to? No guesses? Ok... here it is:

Now if you can't read that it says that I won some chocolate cake mix and chocolate frosting from Cherrybrook Kitchen! I also received a cute little spatula too. The best part? I didn't even know I won. Now I'm sure I got an email update from Blake Bakes telling me to go comment on his blog about how much I'd love to win this fabulous prize and I'm sure I did that but I somehow never caught on that I won!

I gotta say... with a husband with a food allergy (allergic to nuts) I am always looking for allergen-free products so that I know he's safe. Now if the kitchen remodel would only be finished I could whip up some cake with this mix. Maybe I'll be able to make it for book club on Wednesday :)

And I just looked at Blake Bakes to see when he announced the winners and it looks like everyone won! Isn't that the greatest?

Florence: History and Culture

One of the only sites we saw repeatedly in Florence was the Duomo and Baptistery. I felt as if whenever we got lost we ended up at the Duomo. It was basically the center of town so as soon as we found ourselves there we could get back on course. The whole trip was a wonderful experience and Florence was definitely my favorite city.

We saw David at the Academia, toured the Uffizi gallery and took a walking tour of the city to get us oriented and familiar with what we were seeing. The tours were definitely worth the money. We did the Florence in One Day tour only we broke it up into two days with the Academia on Saturday afternoon and the walking tour and Uffizi tour on Sunday.

Here's a shot of the Arno river and the Old Bridge. There's actually a corridor on the top portion of the bridge where the Madici family used to travel from one building to another. This is the only Florintine bridge was saved by the Germans from bombing.

Now into the food. Joseph and I joined my friend Miranda (whom we were staying with in Lugano) and her friend Gavin for dinner the first night. We went to a place that was recommended by Gavin's guide book. It was a great place for our first official meal in Firenze.

I had a great meatball dish with mashed potatoes. I started with a yummy vegetable soup but forgot to take a picture. It was filled with spinach and different veggies. Joseph had a great looking steak (also not pictured).

The second day was filled with tours morning and afternoon so we had to grab a quick bite in between. We went with an easy to find place right in one of the main squares (I think it was in Piazza de la Republica because it was close to the tour office). I had a very yummy mushroom and cheese ravioli with a butter and sage sauce. It was to die for!

Joseph had a pesto pasta with tomatoes. This was also a very good meal. I shared his in between bites of mine and would have been happy choosing either dish. Both were very filling and kept us full until our late dinner (no pictures) at another restaurant in town that Rick Steve's recommended. I had a lasagna with bolenese sauce and Joseph had some more beef. The lasagne was very interesting. It was basically just haphazardly layered lasagne noodles with sauce in between. Not the typically layering you'd find in an American lasagna.

Appenzell: Cheese and Beef

Appenzell is also known as Cow Country in Switzerland. We definitely saw more than our fair share of cows and many other farm animals. But it was great fun and very relaxing. We just stepped back and took in the culture and people of north eastern Switzerland.

We were starving (ok, I was starving) when we got to Appenzell so we decided to have lunch at our hotel The Appenzell Hotel. And by the way, our hotel room looked exactly like the rooms pictured. The bed was super comfortable (we each had our own down blanket to sleep with and had super fluffy, soft pillows).

When we scanned the menu we both decided on the same thing right away. Macaroni and cheese, Appenzeller style. This was a simple macaroni with Appenzeller cheese and topped with fried onions. they served it with a side of applesauce.

The Appenzeller cheese was too strong for my stomach to handle. I think that it might be because of the pregnancy but I could barely get down half of my meal. Joseph, however, seemed to have no problems eating his whole bowl.

We fell asleep early the first night and I ended up waking up at 10:30 starving so I of course panicked thinking that I was screwed and wouldn't be able to get anything to eat so late in a small town. But I was wrong. The ladies downstairs were nice enough to make me a sandwich to bring to my room. I was soo hungry I didn't have time to take a picture but just picture fresh bread, sliced ham, appenzeller cheese, pickles and fresh sliced tomatoes with mustard. It was the best tasting sandwich I've had.

The second night we decided to splurge a little and go to a "fancy" restaurant in town. I knew I wanted a meal with meat and quickly chose the roast. It came topped with an herb butter, mixed vegetables and french fries. We were a bit surprised with the fries (instead of potatoes or rice, etc) but it worked.

The meat was soooo juicy and melted in my mouth. The butter was the perfect topping and I put the rest on my vegetables. Any vegetable soaked in butter is always 100 times better :) I know that the meat looks small and the fries take up 1/2 the plate but this was definitely a memorable and tasty meal.

Every fall the farmers bring their cows through town to move them to a graze in a different pasture for winter. We caught the "tail end" of the cows coming through Appenzell on the first day we were in town. The hostess at our hotel explained that usually the farmers dress up in laterhosen and the cows usually have flowers around their necks and on their heads.

Joseph had some fun on the bobsled in Jakobsbad (yak-uubs-bad) before we went on our barefoot walk and after we went on the Jakobsbad-Kronberg cable car (gondola ride up to the mountains). The cable car took us up to a small mountain area where parachutists took off and went down the mountain to the village below. It was great to watch. In the winter this is where they can ski down or take another lift to another mountain.

Joseph refused to go barefoot but I had a great time. I went through grass pastures, rocky paths, paved road and mud and rinsed my feet off at the fountains along the way. It was definitely an experience. And we were rained on a few times during our walk (light showers but warm air). We saw many cows (see first picture above) on our walk and had a relaxing adventure.

Our Anniversary Trip: San Francisco Part One

San Francisco was wonderful. The weather cooperated for us. It was slightly windy but mostly sunny all weekend and I even got a little sunburn on the last day! We had a wonderful time perusing the shops and eateries and even ran into a few sweet surprises along the way.

We stopped at Fisherman's Wharf for some fun at Pier 39 and Ghiradelli Square.

First up was Kara's Cupcakes in Ghiradelli Square:

The cupcakes were fantastic. I had a Chocolate Peanut Butter. The peanut butter frosting was rich and creamy and the cake was moist and flavorful. All in all it was well worth the $3 we spent on them :)

And Joseph had a Sweet Vanilla. It was a vanilla cupcake with sweet madagascar bourbon vanilla frosting and he was licking his fingers afterwards :)

I won! Let's get blending...

You are looking at my brand spanking new blender! Amber over at Amber's Delectable Delights was giving away a blender on her blog and all we had to do to be considered was comment on her blog entry. Can you believe how easy that is? Well, I commented and told her all of the wonderful things I want to make with my blender.

Using random.org Amber chose my comment as the winner and in a week or two I had a huge box on my doorstep! I am hoping to make some tortilla soup tomorrow with it. I might just have to squeeze in enough time to play :)

Again, many thanks, Amber! This was a wonderful gift that will keep on giving time and time again.

It's arrived!

I received my McQuade's Celtic Chutney today! I cannot wait to use it. I will be buying pork chops among many other ingredients tomorrow after work in preparation of the best darn dinner Joseph's ever had. I will be making pork chops with a fig n' ginger chutney glaze and will finish it off with a fig newton like tart. Not sure on the exact recipe yet but I'm working on it.

I won... AGAIN!

Yup. It must be luck because I just keep on winning great stuff from Blake over at BlakeMakes.com. This time it is Fig & Ginger Chutney from the folks over at McQuade's Celtic Chutney.

Those who wanted a chance at winning had to post what they would do with the jar of chutney. The best 24 entries won a jar. And I won!!! Check out this post for all of the winning entries and check back here in a week or two for my pork chop and dessert recipe!

BlakeMakes Giveaway: TCHO Dark Chocolate

I am a chocolate lover. It is one of the main reasons why I had to join Weight Watchers. I love all things chocolate. Even white chocolate (it isn't even real chocolate... no cocoa bean!). So when I saw BlakeMakes offer a tasting of Tcho's beta dark chocolate to a few lucky Sooper Heros I had to jump on it and make sure I posted on time.

Tcho? What the heck is that? Well, if you google them you'll not only get images of their cool packaging but also will be directed to their website and websites who've reviewed them. Tcho is a San Francisco based company who prides themselves on seriously good dark chocolate. They are set on having the perfect product and are testing the heck out of their different varieties.

Well my cute silver package came in the mail this week and I couldn't help taking a bite right away. I have to say... it was some pretty darn good chocolate. It was smooth and flavorful. Almost an earthy sweet taste. I only took a nibble from one square because I plan on making brownies this weekend with them. I will definitely be blogging more about my full experience soon.

Semi-Food Related...

It's my birthday!

I have an excuse for not posting in a while. I've been super busy with *er* birthday related stuff... yeah. That's it. Well... the truth is, I have all of my pictures taken but getting the pictures from the SD card to the computer takes some effort and today... I just don't have it. But I didn't have it the day before either. Or the day before that. This weekend is the weekend... I promise ;)

Anyway, on with my post. Today was the most spectacular birthday ever. I woke up to a backrub and a present from my hubby. I got the flat iron I wanted (Sedu 1") and the cutest card ever. I than went to work and everyone brought breakfast. A few hours later I was surprised by a delivery from Edible Arrangements...

Courtesy of Joseph! I than headed out to the San Diego Habitat for Humanity annual Hats Off to Women luncheon with my boss. It is such a great cause and a great birthday present from my boss. We're going to do a Woman's Build soon so if anyone's interested let me know and I'll send you the information. After work I headed over to The Prado for happy hour with a few friends and had great drinks, apps, and dessert! YUM!

All in all it had to be the best birthday ever... now I am off to bed!

*** normal dinner postings to come soon ***

My very first blog award!

First off, thank you soo much Katye for this wonderful award! I get so excited to read comments on my posts so seeing your comment on my latest post with this award definitely made my day! I am always so inspired by everyone's blogs on the WC board and was inspired enough to start this blog. One of the people who inspired me to get in the kitchen was you! You're always so nice and helpful whenever you can be.

So now onto those who have made my day (besides Kayte!):
Natalie, Alanna, Amanda, Rachel, Julia, Miranda, Renea, Melissa, Elly and Mary Ellen

Thanks girls for making my day time and time again with your great blogs and ideas!

A sneak peak...

Can you guess what I am going to make with my PBDDL? I'll give you a clue...

I will be attempting this recipe for No Bake Apple Ice Cream Pie shortly. Stay tuned.

Guess what I got today???

Blake Makes PBDDL! For those of you who don't know already, Blake Killian of BlakeMakes.com just gave away his second batch of peanut butter dulce de leche to the first 40 some people who responded to his blog post. Well I signed up as a Sooper Hero soon after the first give away and was bummed to find that I missed out on such a great product. When I heard Blake was giving away more soon I made sure to add him to my GR to keep up with the new progress of the next batch.

I had the date marked on my calender and was ready to post as soon as 8pm rolled around. Too bad I didn't read the fine print and 8pm my time was 9pm Blake's time! I posted a comment anyway hoping for a miracle and didn't hear anything back until today. I am walking to my front door after a long day at work... not only a long day but a long day with two loooong meetings... to find the best little box in the world (ok, second best after my engagement ring box). Joseph had no idea why I was screaming and jumping up and down holding a little white box...

So I finally caught my breath and explained to him what I stated above. He than asked why I was running to get my camera out... duh! I need to document this important moment in my life! ::insert husband rolling eyes here:: I ignored Joseph and went on to open my box in pure childish excitement.

All about the packaging

The cutest darn labels ever

It's real... I scored some PBDDL!

I cannot wait to start thinking about what I am going to make with my two jars. I am thinking something sweet with one and something savory with the other. Hmmm... I wonder how many WW points are in one jar... I don't even want to know :) And last but not least... the first thing I did when I opened a jar...

It was pretty darn good. Too bad Joseph's allergic to peanuts. I guess I am going to have to enjoy the creamy goodness for the both of us. I will be posting soon about my adventures with PBDDL!

Need a Family Photographer?
